Never mind recession-lightened wallets. James Wolcott of Vanity Fair is more concerned about what technology is doing to conspicuous cultural consumption, as literature, music and films recede into gadgets, flash drives and hideaway shelves. “How can I impress strangers with the gem-like flame of my literary passion if it’s a digital slate I’m carrying around, trying not to get it all thumbprinty?”
